About Us
Our main aim is to support and promote the welfare and interests of tenants. To act on their behalf in disputes with landlords; to inform them of their rights and obligations under the Residential Tenancies Act and to assist those who take disputes to the Tenancy Tribunal.
We have a roster of volunteers on our phones every weekday morning where we take enquiries for assistance from tenants. We'll assist you with strategies and offer support and advocacy.
Our Board meets monthly, generally on the second Saturday and our Annual general Meeting is in July each year.
Primary Objective:
- Give advice to tenants who call in, email or phone, on their rights and obligations, mainly under the Residential Tenancies Act 1986 and amendments (latest major amendment: 2020).
- We receive approximately 1,200 tenancy calls a year.
- We endeavor to empower tenants by giving them knowledge of the Act to enable them to act.
- We help tenants prepare applications for the Tenancy Tribunal and assist them in preparing documents and strategies for going to mediation and the Tribunal. Where necessary we will accompany them to the Tribunal.
- We advocate for them with landlords, Kainga Ora (2019: formerly Housing New Zealand) and with Ministry of Social Development.
- We contribute to the training of Citizens’ Advice Bureaux and other community groups personnel on tenancy matters, and supply pamphlets and materials to their offices.
- We work with Maori social support organisations where appropriate.
- As many of our clients are migrants we work with migrant support agencies where necessary and appropriate.
- Many of our clients have mental health issues and we liaise with appropriate agencies where necessary.
- We are a member of a national Tenants Advocates Network (TAN).
- We convene a Housing Issues Sub-Committee with housing workers from across the region.
